Homestead Arts is on the Kitsap Peninsula, located within the beautiful Olympic Peninsula in the North West corner of Washington State. I developed my soap making studio by chance. My sister kept giving me bath products that she couldn't use, because they made her break out in rashes. I started looking into the ingredients and found that most commercial soaps aren't soap at all, they are detergents and filled with all kinds of chemicals and synthetic preservatives. Shortly there after I made my first 100% olive oil soap and I gave some to my sister and other family members, and the next thing I knew, I was a soap maker and loving it.
After the revelations of what commercial "soap" makers where exposing us all to, I continued research into what other potentially harmful ingredients were to be found in common products.
Candles, lip balms, moisturizers, and a host of other personal products led me to begin further exploration.
In our little neck of the woods, we lose power every winter season and rely on candles and oil lamps for light.
My research into candles was enlightening. I found that paraffin, the most common candle ingredient, is a by-product of the crude-oil production process and that when these candles are burned, they emit much of the same gasses as petroleum products. Paraffin candles usually also include unidentified ingredients that help to keep them firm, but may cause emissions that are nearly impossible to identify.
Beeswax, a natural and renewable candle ingredient, is very beautiful even without any dyes, and has a number of other benefits. For one, beeswax candles burn at a higher temperature, and help to ionize the atmosphere. Use of beeswax candles not only eliminates the added pollution that come from paraffin candles, but they also can help to clean the room air that they are in. They also give a light whose spectrum is similar to that of the sun, with a color and smell that is very pleasing. My candles are 100% beeswax, each with a cotton wick. That's all!
My first journey into handmade, personal items was when my mother taught me to knit. I was pregnant and I wanted to create things that would be very personal and specific to the owner, but would also be enduring. I started with little socks and beanies for my baby, then continued to other items as my skill grew. Now, more than one and a half decades later, my interests have developed into many other creations. The knitted and felted bags I create all start with a story that is weaved into my thoughts as I work. The sources of the wool, the hands that clean it, card it, spin it into yarn and dye it are all a part of the creations that I make.
My soaps are made with all natural ingredients and essential oils which are derived from plants, seeds, and nuts. If you have health concerns, allergies, are pregnant or nursing, please read ingredients carefully and consult your physician before use.
Homestead Arts cannot be held responsible or liable for the use of its products.
I will be more than happy to exchange or refund an item. Unfortunately, if the soap packaging has been opened, we will not be able to accept the soap due to health reasons.
